Will Hypnosis Work If I Fall Asleep?

The number one question I get asked is “Will Hypnosis Work If I fall Asleep?  Although this has been debated over and over again, the answer is NO!  During a hypnosis session the client needs to listen to the voice of the Hypnotherapist and absorb information and actively participate in the suggestions given and your brain will be processing language, for the session to have effect.  If this does not happen then you will know you were asleep.

In saying that it is also possible to think you have been asleep, although if you wake up when asked to you will know you have been following along with the session and not asleep.  Another way to gauge if you have been in a hypnotic trance or asleep during your Hypnosis session is – If you have been under a hypnotic trance you will wake up when asked feeling alive and energized afterwards whereas if you were asleep you will feel groggy and a little disorientated.

Here is what Elman had to say on the subject:

“Sleep and hypnosis are really two entirely different states. They are not compatible, when the hypnosis precedes the sleep. Those of you who are doctors know from your medical studies that in sleep the bodily functions slow down. Respiration gets slower and deeper, blood pressure and heart action slow down, reflex action slows down. In hypnosis, you will sometimes find the mildest of slowdowns, but most of the time, none at all. In sleep the mental processes slow down considerably, and in deep sleep, there is an apparent loss of consciousness. This does not occur in hypnosis. “If you test reflex action in hypnosis, you will find it quite normal. Respiration does not decrease; heart action remains normal; blood pressure remains normal. It is true that these functions can be made to slow down by suggestion, but you can’t get them all to slow down simultaneously as occurs in natural sleep.

Despite appearances, it is impossible to fuse these two dissimilar states—the normally functioning body in hypnosis and the slow functioning body in sleep. “We have made over ten thousand tests in an attempt to induce sleep in hypnosis. In my own work Elman stated , I have tried to induce sleep in hypnosis by every known technique, but have yet to see the first success.”If you find you are falling asleep when listening to a Hypnosis download or audio session, try sitting up and listening to the recording.

In order for hypnosis to be effective, there are a few things to consider in understanding how your mind works:

• Whatever it is that you desire to change in your life is going to require you to change your belief at the deepest level of mind, your subconscious level.
• The subconscious mind does not respond the literal meaning of words. The subconscious mind responds to the images and the feelings that you associate with the words. When you hear the words money, health, love, relationships, etc … you quickly formulate a feeling or an image as you are hearing it consciously and it’s that feeling or image that “talks” to the subconscious mind.
• It really does not matter whether or not you “feel” hypnotized or “deep”. What’s important is that you are focusing on your hypnosis session.
• Also, you may notice your mind drifting off and that’s alright because as long as you are conscious, your brain is still in a very receptive mode and you are still getting the information. However, when you do notice you have your attention elsewhere, gently bring it back to focusing on your hypnosis session.

So What Is Hypnosis?

The term “hypnosis” comes from the Greek word hypnos which means sleep. Braid based his practice on that developed by Franz Mesmer and his followers (“Mesmerism” or “animal magnetism”), but differed in his theory as to how the procedure worked.

There is a belief that hypnosis is a form of unconsciousness resembling sleep but contemporary research suggests that hypnotic subjects are fully awake and are focusing attention, with a corresponding decrease in their peripheral awareness.Subjects also show an increased response to suggestions.

Research shows Obesity and junk food addiction may start in the womb which leads to a higher risk of  childhood and adult obesity.   Mothers who consume large quantities of junk food throughout their pregnancy are risking their babies of addiciton to junk food, sugary and fatty foods, according to the latest research.  Consequently these children may develop a higher tolerance to junk food, and throughout their life they will need to eat more of it to get that feel good feeling.

PREGNANT women who eat junk food program their unborn babies to be addicted to an unhealthy, high-fat and high-sugar diet, research suggests. Study leader from the university’s FOODplus Research Centre Dr Bev Muhlhausler said it was likely the addiction – similar to an opiod habit – was present at birth.

University of Adelaide researchers found a diet high in junk food causes children to have a preference for junk food once they have been weaned – the first time the addiction has been found to be present at such a young age.

About Childhood Obesity

More children are becoming overweight and obese. Causes of obesity in children include unhealthy food choices, lack of physical activity and family eating habits. Levels of childhood obesity are increasing at alarming rates in many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

In Australia, one in five children and adolescents are either overweight or obese. From 1985 to 1995 the number of overweight 7–15 year olds almost doubled. The numbers of obese children has more than tripled. At the current rate, it is predicted that 65 per cent of young Australians will be overweight or obese by 2020.

Causes of obesity in children include unhealthy food choices, lack of physical activity and family eating habits. This rise in the number of overweight children is disturbing because it causes health problems and can lead to social problems. Overweight children are more likely to be teased by their peers or to develop low self-esteem or body image problems. Once children are overweight, it requires a lot of effort and commitment for them to return to a healthy weight.

Overweight and obesity in children are among the most important risks to children’s long and short-term health. Overweight children are very likely to become overweight adults. Obese parents often have obese children. Change YOUR eating and lifestyle habits and losing weight benefits everyone!

Most of the health problems associated with obesity become obvious in adulthood. Early signs of these later problems are commonly found in children. Potential health problems for obese children include:

• Cardiomyopathy – a problem with the heart muscle, caused when extra effort is needed to pump blood.

Parents love their children and would protect them with their life, however when  it comes to setting boundaries related to eating habits and healthy lifestyle habits their is a complacency when it comes to leading by example.  Most adults and parents know what they should be doing but neglect to follow though with these healthy habits on a daily basis..

Try these deep breathing exercises to help reduce and eliminate the symptoms of stress. Make a decision to work on your breathing every day and you will experience the benefits within minutes of the first deep breath..  It only takes around three weeks to change a habit and create a new healthy pattern that leads to many health benefits including weight loss.

The Art Of Stress Busting – Deep Breathing For Weight Loss

I. The First Step To Stress Busting Deep Breathing

The first step is to connect with your breath -to become consciously aware of what, for most of us, is an unconscious, automatic process. Do these exercises right now, while you’re reading this.

1. Place one hand on your lower abdomen, just below your navel.

2. Breathe in while pushing out against your hand with your tummy.

3. Breathe out while pushing your tummy in with your hand.

4. Make your breaths longer, deeper and more relaxed as you get used to abdominal breathing.

If your chest is puffing out like a rooster’s, your face is getting red and your shoulders are going up to your ears, you’re doing it wrong. The only area that needs to move is your tummy.

II. Releasing Stress & Tension

1. Breathe in through your nose, expanding your tummy and then your chest.

2. Visualize clean, bright, sparkly light bringing joyful peace coming in and going all the way down to your toes on the in breath.

3. Purse your lips and slowly blow ALL of the air out -like you’re blowing out through a straw. You want to empty your lungs completely.

4. See dark, sick, negative energy or any unwanted emotion going out on the out breath.

Do 9 repetitions. If you want MORE, MORE, MORE because you’re starting to feel so good, you can add additional sets of 9. Stop if you get light headed.

Enjoy the wonderful benefits of natural breathing by doing the exercises daily at a set time and whenever you feel the need throughout your busy day – Soon it will all be automatic.  I have found these deep breathing techniques have been most beneficial to reduce stress and also works well to stop emotional eating and binge eating, just by balancing your mind, body and spirit with oxygen.

Your Breathing could be making you over eat.. You may be wondering… What….  How??   When you become stressed you unconsciously begin to take shallow breathes which causes your body and brain to miss out on blood enriching oxygen, and poisonous carbon dioxide build up inside your tissues which leads to fatigue.

So what’s the first thing that happens when stress or emotional turmoil enters the world?

Your breathing shuts down, Your guts tighten up, Your diaphragm freezes. The focus of your breathing moves up high in your chest. Your breath gets short and shallow. Stress and tension prevail. And, before you even know it, anger, sadness or fear rises up inside you

Many people think they just have no will power to control themselves when it comes to eating and maybe this is true for some people.  There are medical studies that reveal that stress and breathing patterns also play a major role in behaviour which for many people leads to out of control eating, picking on food and binge eating.

Stress is a cycle that goes around and around and leads many people to start eating regardless of whether they are hungry or not.  Then this cycle repeats itself over and over, the more they eat the worse they feel and then without realizing they begin breathing shallow which causes emotional imbalances. Very soon guilt sets in and they become even more stressed and a vicious habit forms. A bad habit that can be hard to overcome and makes losing weight impossible.

Soon, without being aware of it, you become a habitual shallow breather due to stress. You never take a full, deep, relaxing breath. Which leads to you feeling stressed, tired, anxious which is a major trigger to eat for anyone who is inclined to emotional eat.
